Local Spotlight: Dothan Opera House

Dothan Opera House

Babe Ruth knocking out his initial career home run. Pluto being captured in photographs for the first time ever. The world learning about the theory of relativity. What do they all have in common? They happened in 1915—the same year the Dothan Opera House opened. Today, we’re learning more about this local landmark!

What is the Dothan Opera House?

The Dothan Opera House is a spot where talented people from near and far put on shows, recitals, pageants, and more. There’s room for 590 audience members to enjoy each performance. It’s also affiliated with the Dothan Civic Center.

Those who have visited may recall its Victorian-style design. It received a thorough renovation in 1971, updating its offerings and amenities, and making it possible for people to enjoy its presence for years to come. Now, it even has a conference room!

Visiting the Dothan Opera House

We don’t have to tell you that 2020 has been an interesting year. The Dothan Opera House—and those who bring art to life there—understands that the world is in a unique position. Though everyone would love to see shows—not to mention perform in them—taking good care of our town’s city is much more important. That means a hiatus—but plans are already on the books for Gene Watson to perform live on stage on March 13, 2021.

In the meantime, you can still make a virtual visit to the Dothan Opera House. They have an online tour featured on their site, and you can check it out right here. You can see just why it has earned a spot on the National Register of Historic Places! Plus, it’s fascinating to experience having the same view of the performers standing on stage.

Summary

For more than a hundred years, the Dothan Opera House has brought our community together. Though they don’t have a packed schedule this year, at least we can all look forward to their return. They do say that absence makes the heart grow fonder!
