The Wiregrass United Way (WUW) wrapped up it’s 2020 fundraising campaign on January 31st. When the last dollar was in the books, the unexpected became a happy reality!
Wiregrass United Way was on a mission last year to approach fundraising during the pandemic in a positive, non-traditional way. They set a goal to raise $2.9 million in funding. Not only did they meet the goal, they exceeded it!
Thanks to a good-natured challenge presented by the Wiregrass Foundation, the final total raised in the 2020 campaign reached $3.3 million!
According to a recent article by The Dothan Eagle, the Foundation stated that if the Wiregrass United Way met its $2.9 million goal, it would be pleased to give an additional $400,000. WUW CEO Walter Hill had a surreal moment when on January 31st, his spreadsheet calculated exactly $2.9 million!
Wiregrass Foundation President Troy Fountain believes it was meant to be. Both organizations are grateful to the outpouring of generosity from the community members. Each donation to the Wiregrass United Way—whether it was $15 or $20—made this possible.
More About WUW
The Wiregrass United Way focuses on three main areas: education, income and health.
Based in historic downtown Dothan, they serve six counties. Those counties include Barbour, Coffee, Dale, Geneva, Henry and Houston counties. Wondering what the $3.3 million in funding goes to? It’s distributed to the 39 partner agencies who in turn provide needed services to residents in the six counties.
How much is kept in the Wiregrass? According to the FAQ web page, 98 cents of every dollar stays in the area. For more information about the funding and what happens to the two cents, click here.
The Wiregrass Foundation
The Wiregrass Foundation’s mission mirrors that of WUW in that it also wants to organize and effectively help the Wiregrass community as a whole. It also focuses on three areas, which include health, education and quality of life.
